Shut up, sit in that chair there and go into a deep trance! Milton H Erickson
|
Well, rest assured I won’t be telling you to shut up, but Milton H Erickson was quite the geezer. He died in 1980 but his pioneering approach still underpins the best modern hypnotherapy practice. I love his curiosity, humour, broad-based inventiveness, pragmatism, and sheer human warmth!
Challenges Erickson experienced early in life gave him a unique insight, inquisitiveness and observational strength, and he rejected the traditionalist view that that the customer should be a passive participant in an inflexible, impersonal experience. He applied any number of creative, flexible approaches to therapy, respecting clients’ individuality and rejecting the ‘one size fits all’, impersonal style. This method empowered customers to make the changes they needed, or, as he put it, ‘You use hypnosis not as a cure but as a means of establishing a favourable climate in which to learn.’ I couldn’t agree more!
