Your superpower (making first contact).
|
I believe one of the most difficult aspects of therapy is making contact in the first place, so today I’ve written an imaginary Q&A about doing just that. It may feel like you need superhuman strength to take that first step, but once you have then you might be surprised by how easy it is to keep going.
I wouldn’t know where to start. It’s so important to find a therapist you feel you can talk to! Browsing sites like the AfSFH Directory is great as you can pick a therapist from their detailed profile, safe in the knowledge that they are a qualified professional. I wouldn’t know what to say. Finding the right medium for you to make first contact is important. Some clients want to talk. Some shudder at the thought of a phone conversation and prefer to compose their thoughts in an email. Some just send a quick text to ask for an appointment. All of that is fine by me! I’ve not had anyone communicating with interpretive dance yet, but I’d be cool with it. What if I get upset? Hey, we wouldn’t be therapists if we were uncomfortable with strong emotions! If you’ve been struggling for some time it’s understandable you might feel upset when you finally get to talk about it. I can often hear the wobble in people’s voices when they make that first call, and they very often do cry. That’s absolutely fine - it’s my job to hold a safe space for you in which to let go. What if I don’t like the therapist? We won’t take it personally! We therapists are trained to build rapport with our clients but there are as many personalities as there are people on the planet. If you don’t ‘chime’ with your therapist, don’t give up. Keep browsing the directories … there will be someone just right for you somewhere. What if I feel pressured into making further appointments? Not on my watch. If you want to take things forward I’ll be happy to book you in, but I won’t give you any hard sell. Our first meeting will be a gentle initial consultation where we’ll get to know each other, I’ll tell you a little about how the brain works, then I’ll give you a taster relaxation. After that, it’s up to you. Hope that’s helpful - if you’ve any other questions do message me! Check out more Snippets and FAQs for information on Solution Focused Hypnotherapy.
